The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported on Monday the death of one of its personnel following the explosion of a projectile at one of its positions in the Marjayoun district, in the southeast of the country.

This incident, which also left another member seriously injured, has raised concerns about the safety of peacekeepers in the region. Sources from the Spanish Ministry of Defense confirmed that the deceased was not a member of the Spanish troops.

The UN mission expressed its condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased, who “lost their life while bravely fulfilling their duty.” UNIFIL has launched an investigation to clarify the origin of the projectile, highlighting that deliberate attacks against peacekeepers violate International Humanitarian Law and may constitute war crimes.

The UN reiterated its call to all parties to fulfill their obligations and guarantee the safety of UN personnel and property. The statement emphasized the need to avoid any action that endangers the 'blue helmets', concluding that “the violence must end”.

The fatal attack occurs in a context of intensified attacks between Israel and Hezbollah. The escalation of violence has been aggravated by Israeli bombings against positions of the Lebanese group and subsequent exchanges of fire on the border.

In recent weeks, the mission has recorded multiple incidents, including previous attacks against UN bases, where peacekeepers had to take refuge in bunkers. Mission spokesperson Kandice Ardiel explained that bullets, fragments, and shrapnel impacted buildings and open areas within the headquarters, putting soldiers at risk.

In previous incidents, UNIFIL has suffered casualties, including three 'blue helmets' injured after the impact of two missiles at the Ghana battalion base in Al Qawzá, in southwestern Lebanon, during an exchange of fire between the Israeli Army and Hezbollah.

The situation in southern Lebanon continues to deteriorate, with the recent loss of life and the increase in tension in the region.

UNIFIL is investigating the origin of the projectile that caused the death of the peacekeeper, seeking to determine responsibilities and ensure the safety of its personnel.
