Australian police shot dead Desmond 'Dezi' Freeman, who had been on the run for seven months following a shooting in August of last year.

Freeman, accused of shooting two police officers and wounding a third, was located in a building in Thologolong, Victoria. The discovery sparked a three-hour standoff that ended with his death.

Authorities have not yet officially confirmed the identity of the body but suspect it to be Freeman.

State Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush stated that the shooting appeared justified based on the information available.

Freeman was wanted for the death of Detective Constable Neal Thompson and Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart, in addition to injuring another officer.

The search for Freeman was the number one priority for Victoria police since August 26, according to Bush.

Bush indicated that the man was found in a property he described as 'a cross between a [shipping] container and a very long caravan'.

The suspect came out of the building wrapped in a blanket, according to Bush, who added that he suspected he had received help while on the run.

Authorities believe Freeman was part of the sovereign citizen movement, an anti-government group.

Detective Constable Thompson, with nearly 40 years of service in the Victoria Police, was close to retiring.

The news of Freeman's possible death was first communicated to the families of Thompson and De Waart.

Police did not confirm whether Freeman's location was the result of a tip from a local resident regarding his whereabouts.

The shooting incident occurred after Freeman allegedly shot two officers in Porepunkah, Victoria, in August of last year.

Authorities have initiated internal investigations and a coroner's hearing is expected to clarify the details of the event.

Commissioner Bush stated that this fact put an end to a tragic and terrible event.
