Imax CEO Richard Gelfond Takes Medical Leave for Pneumonia Treatment

Imax announced that its CEO, Richard Gelfond, will be temporarily absent to receive medical treatment for pneumonia.

The film technology company reported that Gelfond is receiving outstanding care and progressing in his recovery. Gelfond, who has led the company since 2009 and joined as co-CEO in 1993, will be absent from public and private Imax events during his recovery.

During Gelfond's medical leave, Imax executives, led by CFO Natasha Fernandes, will oversee day-to-day responsibilities alongside board chairman Darren Throop.

Imax issued a statement to ensure transparency and avoid speculation about Gelfond's absence from upcoming company events, including next week's industry conferences.

Gelfond has been at the helm of Imax as the company navigates the post-pandemic box office recovery for Hollywood studios, its main film suppliers.

This is thanks to a high-demand premium screen offering and Hollywood films shot with proprietary Imax cameras.

To protect Gelfond's privacy, Imax will not offer further comments beyond appropriate updates.

His current contract with Imax runs through 2028.

Darren Throop, chairman of the board of directors, stated: “We have a strong, deeply experienced senior executive team who are fully engaged, providing regular updates to the board, and remaining focused as always on the continued growth and success of Imax.”

Throop added: “We are all wishing Rich well and a full and speedy recovery”.
