World Snooker Championship Qualifiers Draw Sees Big Names Battle for Crucible

The excitement of snooker is about to intensify as the draw for the World Snooker Championship qualifiers has been revealed.

The main stages at the Crucible, running from April 18 to May 4, will be preceded by a crucial qualifying phase to determine the 16 players who will join those already seeded.

The English Institute of Sport will host the qualifying action from April 6 to 15, where players outside the world's top 16 will compete for a coveted spot at the Crucible.

The qualifying draw is packed with recognizable names, including former world champions Stuart Bingham and Luca Brecel, as well as tournament winners this season such as Jack Lisowski and Stephen Maguire.

Ali Carter, Gary Wilson, Zhang Anda, and Jak Jones, who have all been to the Crucible as seeded players in recent years, must now face the nervy qualifying stage.

The tiered system sees players ranked 81 and below entering at the first stage, needing to win four matches to reach the Crucible.

Players ranked 49-80 will enter in round two, and those ranked 17-48 will enter in round three, requiring them to win just two matches.

Luca Brecel, for example, must win two matches to return to the Crucible, demonstrating the competitiveness of the qualifying phase.

There are plenty of either/or situations for the later ties, but highlights of the opening round include 15-year-old Polish sensation Michal Szubarczyk taking on former women’s world champion Ng On Yee.

Shoot Out champion Alfie Burden is in action against one of Britain’s brightest young talents in 20-year-old Liam Pullen.

Additionally, two-time Crucible semi-finalist Marco Fu faces Mink Nutcharut, also a former women’s world champion.

The draw is yet to be entirely confirmed as Thepchaiya Un-Nooh is still in the Tour Championship, which will affect his seeding and the seeding of other players.

Thepchaiya’s result in Manchester also impacts the seedings of Stuart Bingham, Jack Lisowski, Jak Jones, Zhang Anda, and Elliot Slessor.

Professionals Sunny Akani and Mohamed Shehab have not entered the tournament, adding an element of uncertainty to the competition.
