The former President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, has launched harsh criticism against the PSC (Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya), accusing them of promoting an agenda that, in his opinion, fuels Spanish nationalism and, consequently, xenophobic attitudes. His statements come after incidents at the RCDE Stadium during a friendly match between the national teams of Spain and Egypt, where chants of an Islamophobic and xenophobic nature were heard.
Puigdemont argues that the PSC's strategy to weaken Catalanism paradoxically strengthens a Spanish nationalism that has historically denied cultural diversity and acted with an imperialist impulse. In his post on the social network 'X', Puigdemont argues that this Spanish nationalism seeks "cultural substitution", a concept that, according to him, has been adopted by the far right worldwide. This accusation adds a new chapter to the already tense political relationship between Junts, Puigdemont's party, and the PSC.
