Born in Calumet, Michigan, in 1931, Tolkan graduated from Amphitheater High School in 1949. In 1983, he moved his career to California and Canada, where he landed his most memorable film roles as Mr. Strickland in 'Back to the Future' (1985), directed by Robert Zemeckis, and the following year, as commanding officer 'Stinger' in 'Top Gun.'
Tolkan reprised his role in all three films of the 'Back to the Future' franchise. Fans will always remember him for his iconic line, which became synonymous with his on-screen persona. 'When we did the second and third movies, we had huge trailers, and it was unbelievable,' he stated to Impulse Gamer. 'That's what I remember – the fun of it. It's the most fun I've ever had doing a movie.'
