The actor studied at The Actors Studio with Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg, after serving in the U.S. Navy and attending Coe College and the University of Iowa, before settling in New York.
Tolkan is perhaps best recognized for his role as Principal Strickland in the 'Back to the Future' trilogy, appearing in the original 1985 film and the 1989 sequel. In 1990, he returned as the grandfather of his character for the third film.
