Runway, the AI video generation company, is broadening its horizons beyond building AI video models. Its focus is now on shaping what is built on top of them. To achieve this, the company has launched a $10 million investment fund, designed to support early-stage companies working in key areas such as AI, media, and world simulation. In addition, a developer program is being implemented, offering free API credits to startups from the seed stage to Series C. This initiative suggests that Runway seeks to foster an ecosystem around what it calls "video intelligence".
Runway has established itself as one of the leading players in AI video generation, with its tools used in film, advertising, and marketing. However, with the launch of its "general world models" last December, the company is transcending creative tools to explore broader applications. The strategy involves collaborating with startups, allowing it to explore use cases that it could not address on its own.

However, with the launch of its "general world models" last December, the company is transcending creative tools to explore broader applications. Alejandro Matamala Ortiz, Runway's co-founder and chief design officer, explained that, through video, the goal is to achieve video intelligence, which will open up a wider range of use cases in various industries. Runway's fund is structured around three fundamental pillars: technical teams that drive the cutting edge of AI and build new architectures; developers who create the application layer on top of foundational models and bring AI to new use cases; and companies that experiment with new forms of media creation, storytelling, and distribution.
Over the past year and a half, Runway has quietly backed a group of early-stage founders and companies. Among them are LanceDB, which develops databases for AI applications, and Tamarind Bio, which uses AI to design new proteins for drug discovery. Some startups, like Cartesia, which is dedicated to real-time audio generation, are developing products that complement Runway's.

Chang She, co-founder and CEO of LanceDB, highlighted that the next generation of AI models will be built on multimodal data, combining video, audio, images, and text. LanceDB is building the infrastructure layer that makes this integration possible, and Runway is one of the few investors who understands the importance of this vision.
Runway has raised close to $860 million to date, with the backing of investors like Nvidia and Qatar Investment Authority. The company is valued at approximately $5.3 billion post-money. The $10 million fund is nourished by existing investors and close partners, with plans to grant checks of up to $500,000 for pre-seed and seed-stage startups.

Runway is not the only AI startup that is investing in companies in their early stages. OpenAI, with its Startup Fund, and Perplexity, with its $50 million fund launched last year, are also driving the AI ecosystem. CoreWeave Ventures also joined this trend in September.
Ortiz points out that many companies are investing heavily in the basic elements that will unlock a new set of applications and types of companies. Companies like Runway, which are still relatively small, cannot focus on everything, but they see opportunities in partnering early with new teams that can benefit from their advances.

Runway's new developer program, which offers 500,000 API credits and access to Characters, its real-time video agent API, powered by its new general world models, is a clear example of this philosophy. Characters allows users to interact with generative AI agents in real time, with faces and voices that can range from cartoonish to photorealistic.
The program is already underway, with a founding cohort that includes Cartesia, MSCHF, Oasys Health, Spara, Subject, and Supersonik, who are using Characters to power AI customer support agents, interactive brand characters, personalized onboarding experiences, real-time sales assistants, and synthetic media tools. Ortiz is excited about the potential in telemedicine and education, and expects Characters to be used in games and new entertainment experiences.

Ortiz envisions a future where entire environments can be generated and simulated, allowing users to participate and interact with characters in these worlds. Companies like Inworld and Charisma are also developing interactive AI characters for games and storytelling, while StoReel is experimenting with AI-generated programs that users can interact with directly.
Ortiz concludes that they truly believe in a new type of internet that will be more personalized, immersive, and real-time.
