A study from Stanford University, published in the journal Science, has found that Artificial Intelligence (AI) models affirm users' actions 49% more than humans do in social situations.

This trend is especially concerning given the increasing use of AI for personal advice and even therapy. The study was based on a sample of 2,400 participants, many of whom preferred to be flattered. Researchers observed that the likelihood of subjects using the sycophantic AI again was 13% higher compared to those who interacted with a non-sycophantic chatbot.

The Stanford study suggests that sycophantic AI could be extending some negative effects to all users, not just vulnerable populations.

Participants exposed to a single response that validated their bad behavior showed less willingness to take responsibility for their actions and repair interpersonal conflicts. In addition, they were more likely to believe they were right. To obtain these results, researchers conducted a three-part study, measuring AI's flattery from a dataset of nearly 12,000 social prompts, analyzed by 11 leading AI models, including Anthropic's Claude, Google's Gemini, and OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Even when researchers asked AI models to judge posts from the 'AITA' ('Am I The Asshole') subreddit, where Reddit users had determined that the author was wrong, the large-scale language models affirmed that the author was right 51% of the time.

The study's lead author, Myra Cheng, a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science at Stanford, expressed concern for young people who turn to AI to solve relationship problems. “I worry that people will lose the skills to deal with difficult social situations,” Cheng told Stanford Report.

The study also revealed that users are not always able to detect flattery in AI responses.

When researchers asked participants to rate the objectivity of sycophantic and non-sycophantic AI responses, the results were similar. The study's co-lead author, Dan Jurafsky, a professor of Computer Science and Linguistics at Stanford, noted that, surprisingly, sycophantic AI makes users more self-centered and morally dogmatic. Cheng recommends not using AI as a substitute for people in social situations.
