The tragic incident occurred at Banorte Stadium, formerly known as Estadio Azteca, in Mexico City on Saturday before the friendly between Mexico and Portugal. The stadium, recently renovated, was set to host the World Cup opening ceremony this summer. According to Reuters, the man was in the box seats on the second level of the stadium and attempted to jump down to the first level.
He tried to climb along ‘the exterior of the structure’ but fell to the ground and died as a result. Local authorities confirmed that the man was intoxicated. A statement from Fiscalía CDMX, posted on social media, deeply regretted the death, stating that the necessary investigations had been initiated. The area was cordoned off, the scene was secured, and evidence was collected by experts in criminalistics, photography, and forensic medicine.

In addition, the analysis of CCTV footage from the stadium and its entrances is underway, as is the collection of statements from people present at the scene, with the aim of accurately reconstructing the sequence of events and determining potential liabilities. The autopsy is underway to establish the cause of death and the individual's physical condition at the time of the fall.
