Tiger Woods Arrested for DUI After Rollover Crash in Florida
The incident occurred in Martin County, Florida, where Woods was charged with driving under the influence (DUI), property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful test. The accident took place around 2 p.m. ET. Martin County Sheriff John M. Budensick briefed the media about the event at 5 p.m. ET. Woods was driving a Range Rover and attempted to overtake a pressure cleaner truck that was pulling a small trailer on South Beach Road, near his residence. The speed limit in the area is 30 miles per hour, although Woods' speed is unknown.
After the crash, Woods was able to crawl out of the driver's side door. The truck driver was not injured. According to Sheriff Budensick, Woods exhibited signs of impairment. After in-depth roadside tests, Woods was arrested and taken to the Martin County jail. Florida law requires people to be held for at least eight hours after a DUI test. Woods blew triple zeros on the breathalyzer test but refused to take a urine analysis.
Due to his refusal to submit to the urine test, it is unlikely that it will be determined what substance Woods was under the influence of. Drug recognition experts believe it may have been some type of medication or drug. Woods is recovering from his latest back surgery in October and his Achilles tear last March. In 2021, Woods nearly required the amputation of his right leg after a car accident in California, where he was driving at 87 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone.
In 2017, Woods was arrested near his Florida home for DUI, after being found asleep in his car on the side of the road. In 2009, Woods sustained minor injuries after hitting a fire hydrant and a tree near Orlando, which triggered his cheating scandal. Coverage of the PGA Tour's Houston Open moved to the Golf Channel website to stream the police briefing on Woods live. Woods' arrest was the lead topic on SportsCenter and Pardon The Interruption.
Woods returned to competitive golf on Tuesday, playing in the TGL Finals for his Jupiter Links Golf Club. After the match, he said he was trying to play the Masters, which begins on April 9, but did not commit to teeing it up at Augusta National.
