Bethnal Green Gardens in east London has long been a haven for skaters, offering a safe and smooth space to practice tricks and spins. However, the recent establishment of a padel court in the middle of the park has sparked protests and criticism from the skating community. The court, installed by Tower Hamlets Council, was built on March 10 with the aim of assessing interest in this growing sport in the UK.
Matheus, a local resident, expressed his bewilderment: "It almost feels intentional. Why is it right in the middle? There's space on either side." The padel court, which is initially free, is expected to cost £24 per hour once construction is complete, although in other areas of London, such as Stratford, the price can be as high as £58 per hour. This has intensified the discontent of the skaters, who see the court as a barrier that interrupts their usual space.
