From ESPN to Big Ten Network: Michele Steele Returns to Her Sports Roots in a New Role
Michele Steele, known for her work at ESPN for nearly 14 years, has been hired by Big Ten Network (BTN) for a contributor role in its game and studio programming. The news was confirmed by Steele herself in a telephone interview. Her first assignment will be as a sideline reporter for the Nebraska Red-White spring football game this Saturday. Steele, a Chicago native, expressed her enthusiasm for returning to the coverage of the sports conference where she grew up, as she is a graduate of the University of Illinois.

The journalist, who left ESPN last July, will also share her experience as a host and anchor on BTN's daytime and nighttime shows. In addition, Steele continues to contribute to Stocktwits, an investment and social media platform, and collaborates with National Public Radio (NPR) on weekend sports segments. She is also a fill-in presenter at WGN-TV in Chicago, reflecting the diversity of her professional career.
In her new role, Steele will not only be a field reporter, but will also present and anchor studio programs. She will work alongside renowned BTN figures such as Dave Revsine, Rick Pizzo, and Mike Hall, whom she describes as 'walking encyclopedias' of the Big Ten. This opportunity allows Steele to combine her experience in the field with her ability to present in the studio, where she can show another facet of her personality.

Steele highlights that, at ESPN, she had a successful career of almost 14 years, working in multiple markets. She recalled her beginnings in Bristol and her subsequent move to Boston to cover the Patriots. Her experience at ESPN gave her the satisfaction of being a field reporter, but she also enjoyed anchoring SportsCenter for more than eight years, demonstrating her versatility and passion for sports journalism.
Steele emphasizes the importance of personality in sports presentation, arguing that, in the era of instant information, it is crucial to offer the audience a reason to tune in. She believes that SportsCenter presenters have the freedom to show their personality. Her experience in improvisation, including classes at UCB and Second City, has provided her with tools to connect with the audience more effectively.

Returning to Chicago, Steele feels at home, especially when covering a sports conference that was a fundamental part of her training. This opportunity represents a 'homecoming' both professionally and personally, allowing her to combine her passion for sports with her love for her hometown.
