Iran Bans Sports Teams from Traveling to 'Hostile' Countries
Iran's Ministry of Sports announced on Thursday a ban on its sports teams participating in competitions in countries it deems hostile. According to Iranian media, this measure is taken due to security concerns. The ban states that the presence of national and club teams in countries that are considered hostile and cannot ensure the safety of Iranian athletes and team members is prohibited until further notice.

This decision comes in the context of increasing geopolitical tensions and conflicts in the region, in particular, the ongoing war between the United States and Israel, with profound consequences for the region. The measure reflects the Iranian government's position regarding the safety of its citizens and athletes abroad.
The ministry's statement does not apply to Iran's Tractor FC soccer game against Shabab Al Ahli of Dubai, which is set to take place in Saudi Arabia in April, according to the Associated Press. This is a playoff game in the AFC Champions League Elite.

The ban, however, generates uncertainty about Iran's participation in future international sporting events. The World Cup, which begins on June 11 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is not mentioned, which adds a layer of complexity to the Iranian sports landscape.
The president of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, stated on X earlier this month that Iran has been negotiating with FIFA to move its World Cup games out of the United States and into Mexico. This is because former President Trump could not guarantee the safety of the Iranian national team.

Taj stated, “When Trump has explicitly stated that he cannot ensure the security of the Iranian national team, we will certainly not travel to America.” Iran is scheduled to play two matches in Inglewood, California, and one in Seattle from June 15-26.
