World Snooker Championship to Replace White Ball with Green

The 17-day event at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield will ditch the traditional cue ball and replace it with a bright green equivalent.

This modification, driven by the partnership with Midnite, the event's UK betting and casino partner, seeks to renew the sport's image and attract new audiences. Kyren Wilson, world number 2 player, believes this change could enhance the game.

The World Snooker Tour approved the changes to the ball color for this year's World Snooker Championship. Jason Ferguson, chair of snooker's global governing body, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association, welcomed the initiative.

Ferguson highlighted the importance of innovation in the sport, despite its rich tradition. He stated that both fans and players will enjoy this new ball, exclusive to the World Championship.

Ferguson called the change one of the biggest in the 150-year history of the sport. The implementation of the green ball will take place for the first time at the Crucible Theatre, the event's venue.

The government has invested millions to keep the championship in Sheffield until 2045, although it will temporarily move to another location to allow renovations later in the decade.

Wilson added that he thinks it's a fantastic step forward for snooker. The idea of the white ball turning neon green may sound bold at first, but it's exactly what the sport needs to grab attention and get people talking.

The player highlighted the need for evolution to attract a new generation of fans. Wilson believes this change could give the championship a fresh energy and create something iconic.

Wilson emphasized the importance of being open-minded about these changes, highlighting that if it helps showcase the sport in a new way and gets people to watch, it will be beneficial for everyone.
