On March 30, 1979, the NHL announced the addition of four teams from the World Hockey Association, expanding from 17 to 21 teams for the 1979-80 season: Edmonton Oilers, Hartford Whalers, Winnipeg Jets, and Quebec Nordiques. The Oilers have won five Stanley Cups since then.
