Early Sunday morning, two inmates from the Special Closed Regime Department (DERT) attempted to escape from Brians 2 Penitentiary Center, located in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, Barcelona. The prisoners managed to leave their cell after manipulating the ceiling panel and accessing a technical area. They were found carrying manipulated sticks and an iron bar. The quick intervention of the officials prevented the escape from being completed, but the incident highlighted serious security problems.

The inmates were relocated to the DERT and the corresponding security measures were applied.

The CSIF union reported that the prison's alarm systems did not activate during the escape attempt, indicating a recurring failure in the security devices. According to the union, this situation demonstrates the lack of proper functioning of the systems, a problem that has not been resolved for some time. The area accessed by the inmates is located between the ceiling of the cells and the roof, a space that houses vital systems for security and ventilation.

A female officer noticed the escape attempt upon hearing suspicious noises, and another inmate alerted about the presence of water in his cell. Prison sources informed Europa Press about the details of the incident. The officials requested that structural security measures be reinforced, that the functioning of the alarms be guaranteed, and that the staff in the special regime modules be increased.

After being located, the two inmates were detained and transferred back to the DERT. The Department of Justice and Democratic Quality of the Generalitat reported that the quick action of the officials allowed the incident to be detected and the escape to be prevented. After the incident, the transfer of the two inmates to other penitentiary centers was authorized, indicating an immediate response to prevent future incidents.

The SICAP-FEPOL union requested the immediate resignation of the general director of Penitentiary Affairs, Domingo Estepa. For this organization, the incident is not isolated, but rather proof of the deterioration of the prison facilities, their lack of maintenance, and the absence of preventive measures. SICAP-FEPOL considers that the security of Brians 2 depends more on the expertise of the staff than on the correct functioning of the technical means.
