Trump Rejects Senate Homeland Security Funding Bill

Former President Trump indicated his rejection of the Senate-passed funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In a phone interview with Fox News, Trump stated that the bill "wasn't appropriate" because it didn't include appropriations for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Trump declared, "In my opinion, you can't have a bill that's not going to fund ICE. You can't have a bill that's not going to fund any form of law enforcement." He further accused Democrats of wanting "open borders, no ICE, no border patrol." These statements reflect the former president's stance on border security policies.

The Senate passed a DHS funding bill early Friday morning, aimed at preventing a department shutdown. However, this bill funded most of the department, including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), but not ICE or CBP. This decision prompted an immediate response from the House of Representatives, which rejected the measure and offered an alternative continuing resolution. The positions of the Senate and the House reflect the political divisions surrounding border security and the funding of federal agencies.

The Senate bill, which sought to avoid a government shutdown, failed to satisfy the demands of Trump and other Republicans who demanded full funding for border security agencies.

House Speaker Mike Johnson flatly rejected the Senate's bill, calling it a "joke". Johnson expressed his disbelief that every Senate Republican had read the language of the bill. He stated, "We're not doing that."

Johnson also criticized the Democrats for allegedly forcing a negotiation in the early hours of the morning. The disagreement between the House and Senate underscores the deep political divisions in Congress and the difficulty of reaching agreements on national security and government funding issues.

Trump, for his part, directed DHS to pay TSA workers during the government shutdown. In a memo, Trump stated that "these circumstances constitute an emergency situation compromising the Nation's security."

According to a DHS spokesperson, TSA employees would start to see paychecks as early as Monday as a result of Trump's executive action. The government shutdown, which had already lasted 42 days, created uncertainty and hardship for federal workers.

The dispute over DHS funding and Trump's rejection of the Senate bill highlight the ongoing political tensions in Congress and the White House. Differences regarding the funding of border security agencies, such as ICE and CBP, and immigration policies are key points of conflict.
