In a recent interview with CBS News, Senator Rand Paul indicated he is considering a presidential run for 2028. The GOP lawmaker stated that the possibility is 50-50, and he will make a decision after this November's midterm elections. Paul previously ran for president in 2016, dropping out to run for reelection in the Senate. This statement marks a potential return to the presidential stage for the senator.
Senator Paul has been vocal in his criticism of several of the Trump administration's policies. He previously said he would not back Vice President Vance in a presidential contest. Vance is widely considered to be a frontrunner for the Republican ticket in 2028, along with others such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. This stance reflects his independence within the party.
Paul has broken with his party on several legislative issues. Recently, he voted with Democrats to support a war powers resolution to rein in President Trump's military actions against Iran. He also refused to vote for the appointment of Markwayne Mullin to lead the Department of Homeland Security, after a clash during Mullin's confirmation hearing. The Senate confirmed Mullin's appointment on Monday.
The conservative legislator, who has run on libertarian values, said there is 'not much left' in terms of the Republican Party's free market and libertarian wing. He stated that, on many days, he is the only one left in the Senate for free trade. Despite this, he believes there is a 'desire' among voters in the business community for these values. This suggests a possible strategy to differentiate himself within the party.
Paul commented that, by combining the libertarian vote with the Chamber of Commerce and the traditional business community that doesn't favor protectionism, there may be a force for a different direction for the party, other than being led by populism. This statement indicates his interest in building a broader coalition. His vision is a party that moves away from populism and focuses more on free market principles.
