DeSantis Signs Bill to Rename Palm Beach Airport After Trump

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation that will rename Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) to 'Donald J. Trump International Airport'. The bill, which Republicans in the Florida House and Senate passed last month, gives the state the authority to name 'major commercial service airports'. It also renames PBI, located roughly four miles from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club, in honor of the former president.

The measure passed with votes of 81-30 in the House and 25-11 in the Senate. The name change for PBI would take effect on July 1 if the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) greenlights it. The Republican Party of Florida touted the impending name change on social platform X, writing: 'Florida is making it official! Welcome to the new President Donald J. Trump International Airport — right in the heart of Palm Beach!'.

The Florida GOP added: 'Florida is honored to be home to this landmark tribute to President @realDonaldTrump', sharing a photo of a sign in front of the airport that reads: 'Welcome to the new President Donald J. Trump International Airport'.

According to WFLX-TV in West Palm Beach, Fla., the name change could cost taxpayers up to $5.5 million. Democrats in the Florida Legislature cited that price tag in advocating against the legislation before Republicans passed it. This move adds to a series of similar actions taken by Trump and his administration.

Since the former president returned to office, he and his administration have added his name to a slew of buildings and programs, including the Kennedy Center, the U.S. Institute of Peace, the TrumpRx prescription drug platform and 'Trump Accounts,' investment accounts that parents can open for their children starting this tax season.

In January, Palm Beach County also officially designated four miles of Southern Boulevard running from PBI to Mar-a-Lago as 'President Donald J. Trump Boulevard.' The following month, the Trump Organization, which is run by the former president’s sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, filed to trademark the use of the former president’s name on airports.

The decision to rename the airport has generated diverse reactions. Some celebrate it as a tribute, while others criticize the cost and the politicization of a public space. The law reflects Trump's growing influence in Florida and the desire of his supporters to honor his legacy.

This type of action is common in American politics, where the names of political figures are often associated with important places and buildings. However, the cost and the opportunity of these decisions are always subject to debate. The FAA still needs to approve the name change, which could delay or even prevent its implementation.
