Carlos Westendorp, who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs during Felipe González's government, passed away this Monday. The news was confirmed by the current Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, who highlighted his important role in Spanish foreign policy. Westendorp was also an ambassador in Washington and to the United Nations, leaving a lasting mark on Spanish diplomacy.
Albares described him as a "key figure in foreign policy and an exemplary public servant," emphasizing his commitment to the European project, dialogue, and peace. The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, worked in Westendorp's cabinet in 1997 and 1998, when the latter was the UN High Representative for Bosnia-Herzegovina, after the Dayton Accords.
