The news of the passing of Dash Crofts, one half of the soft rock duo Seals & Crofts, was announced by producer Louie Shelton early Thursday morning. Shelton expressed his sorrow on Facebook, sending condolences to the family and fans. Crofts' daughter, Lua, confirmed that the cause of death was heart failure, according to The New York Times. Crofts, whose birth name was Darrell George Crofts, was born on August 14, 1940.
Seals & Crofts scored several hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including the top 10 singles 'Summer Breeze' (No. 6, 1972), 'Diamond Girl' (No. 6, 1973), and 'Get Closer' (No. 6, 1976). The song 'Unborn Child', released in 1973, also generated controversy. Before their success as a duo, Seals and Crofts were members of the rock band The Champs. In 1972, 'Summer Breeze' reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200, followed by 'Diamond Girl' at No. 4 in 1973.
Crofts' passing comes approximately four years after the death of Jim Seals, his musical partner, who died at the age of 80 in 2020. Both, originally from Texas, had known each other since they were teenagers. Seals and Crofts parted ways in 1980, but briefly reunited in the late 80s and early 90s, and again in 2004.
