Russell Laments 'Really Odd' Qualifying at Japanese GP After Car Issue

George Russell experienced an unusual problem with his car during qualifying for the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver, who had shown good pace throughout the weekend, was affected by an anomaly in his car that prevented him from performing at his best. After the qualifying session, Russell described the problem as 'really odd'.

According to his own words, a setup adjustment was made before qualifying, but the car didn't feel the same as it had throughout the rest of the weekend. In Q1, Russell found himself in seventh or eighth position, which forced the team to make significant adjustments to the front wing to compensate.

The British driver detailed the extent of the problem, confirming that the lack of confidence in the corners was a determining factor. 'We had a mechanical issue on the rear end of the car, mainly through the 'esses',' Russell said. 'I couldn't attack any of the corners. The rear was trying to step out on me throughout.' Russell also mentioned that the team will try to determine the cause of the problem, but that, for the moment, there's not much that can be done to fix it before the race.

Russell predicted a difficult race in Suzuka due to these issues, and expressed his concern about the reduction in Mercedes' advantage over its rivals, mentioning McLaren as a threat, in addition to Ferrari.

Securing second position on the grid was, in large part, a damage limitation exercise for Russell. Taking car problems into the race is not ideal, and with McLaren and Ferrari closing in, he risks losing more ground on Sunday. Russell also revealed his surprise at the closeness between Ferrari and McLaren during qualifying. 'Qualifying was very close between Ferrari and McLaren throughout, so that was probably a bit of a surprise to us,' he stated. Despite having had a strong practice session, the team thought they had a greater margin over their competitors.

Russell, who aspired to pole position, saw his expectations frustrated due to the problems with his car. The team tried to solve the problem between Q1 and Q2, but without success. The situation forced Russell to make adjustments to his driving style to compensate for the car's deficiencies. The driver admitted that it was not the session they expected and that, for the second consecutive time, qualifying had been complicated.

Russell concluded that, despite the challenges, they will seek solutions and adjustments for Sunday's race, with the aim of minimizing damage and maintaining a competitive position.
