The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has unveiled details of its new market program, titled 'TIFF: The Market'. This seven-day event will take place from September 10th to 16th, coinciding with the Toronto International Film Festival.

The initiative aims to boost film and series projects from their development stage to financing and sales, with a focus on innovation and support for creators.
The project is backed by a significant investment of CAD $23 million (approximately USD $16.6 million), from the Canadian government and supported by Telefilm Canada.

This investment underscores TIFF's ambition to expand its presence in the industry and provide essential resources for film project development.
Charles Tremblay, a veteran of Canadian distribution and the new head of the market, emphasizes the need for a robust creative pipeline to keep audiences engaged and move the industry forward.

Tremblay, with over two decades of experience in the sector, including co-founding Metropole Films Distribution and working at Mubi, leads this initiative with the goal of connecting creators with decision-makers and preparing their projects for the global market.
The market program includes creative development labs for directors, writers, and series creators, an international financing and project market, an innovation hub, and an IP exchange.

The directors' lab will support filmmakers preparing their first features, while the writers' lab will offer workshops and personalized consultations. The lab for series creators will focus on high-quality episodic projects, with a special focus on Canadian teams from under-represented communities.
The financing and project market, presented in partnership with Ontario Creates, will bring together financiers and established producers to fast-track funding for film, television, and other formats.

This event will facilitate the connection between creators and funding sources, driving the development and production of audiovisual content.
The market will also focus on multimedia and emerging formats through an innovation hub showcasing XR and interactive storytelling, as well as an IP exchange designed to connect publishing, gaming, and immersive media rights holders with film and series producers.

This initiative seeks to foster innovation and adaptation to new trends in the entertainment industry.
A series of grants, awards, and fellowships will be presented at the event, especially for under-represented creators, including the Sloan Science & Technology Writers’ Fellowship, a CAD $35,000 grant for science and technology-focused film projects, and the Sloan Science & Technology Project Pitch, which awards $15,000.

The TIFF-CBC Films Screenwriter Award will also return, offering $15,000 and mentorship opportunities to support Canadian screenwriting talent.
Gosia Kamela, head of CBC Films, expressed her excitement about collaborating with TIFF once again in presenting the screenwriting award, highlighting the impact of the award in promoting emerging talent.

Market registration will open on April 8, offering interested parties the opportunity to participate in this important initiative in the film industry.
