Raised on Houston’s southside, Robert Earl Davis Jr., known as DJ Screw, taught himself to DJ at 12 years old, using his mother’s blues records and analog hardware. His innovative technique, which involved slowing down the tempo and 'chopping' the vocals, resulted in a hypnotic and distinctive sound.
This unique musical approach led to the formation of the S.U.C., a collective of local rappers who defined Houston’s rap scene throughout the 90s. DJ Screw's impact remains palpable in music and popular culture.
