How 'Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen' Creator Haley Z. Boston Became Netflix's Horror Phenom
In an interview, Haley Z. Boston, creator and showrunner of the new Netflix horror series, 'Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen', reveals that her stable upbringing was key to her success. The series, starring Camila Morrone, promises to immerse viewers in a dark story full of unexpected twists. Boston, who was approaching 30 when she conceived the idea, was inspired by the social pressure and fear of commitment she perceives in the wedding environment.

The series promises to be scary, sexy and funny in equal measure, with mysteries that don't drag on too long and unpredictable twists that seem designed to hook horror fans. Boston sought to keep the audience intrigued and surprised by the source of the horror, playing with the viewer's uncertainty.
Boston grew up in Portland, Oregon, and developed a taste for the macabre from a young age. She was a teenager during the 2010s, an era of gritty horror remakes, drawing inspiration from classics like 1976's 'Carrie' and modern takes like the 2009 remake of 'The Last House on the Left'. She explains that horror became her way of processing the world.

Boston began her Hollywood journey by moving to Los Angeles and getting a job at WME. She decided that, once she got the job, she would never lie about what she wanted to do. She was fortunate enough to work there for a year and then assisted a showrunner; also, she was represented at a very young age, at 23. She met her representatives at a networking event.
Boston had her first writing experience thanks to the creators of 'Brand New Cherry Flavor', a horror revenge miniseries that premiered on Netflix in 2021. After this experience, she pitched an episode for the Netflix horror anthology series, 'Cabinet of Curiosities' by Guillermo del Toro, who, although impressed, advised her on how to adapt her vision to an existing structure. Del Toro told her, 'You are obviously talented, but this is too weird'.

After her time on 'Hunters', the Al Pacino series from Prime Video, and filming her first short film, Boston developed 'Something Very Bad' and became showrunner of the project before she turned 30.
The Duffer brothers, creators of 'Stranger Things', backed Boston as executive producers and gave her valuable mentorship. The Duffers conveyed the message of protecting her original vision and not letting herself be influenced by the various creative opinions that arise in a project. They advised her to trust her creative decisions and to remain true to her vision. They also pushed for her role as sole showrunner, which was a great challenge.

Boston found in 'Something Very Bad' an opportunity to excel in various creative areas, from writing to post-production and directing.
Boston highlights the importance of editing in post-production, where tone and performance can be changed. Now, at 31 and with the premiere of the series, Boston is eager to see what the future holds and to continue writing, always remembering what it was for her before she was paid for it.

The series 'Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen' promises to be an exciting journey into the world of horror, with a creator who has known how to turn her fears and experiences into a captivating narrative.
