The year 2026 has brought a series of dramatic events for Cain Dingle, played by Jeff Hordley, in the popular series Emmerdale. After being rushed to the hospital for a gunshot wound, Cain received news that he needed to undergo tests to rule out cancer due to a lump detected. Waiting for the results proved to be a period of great stress for both him and Moira Dingle, played by Natalie J Robb.

The situation was further complicated by the downfall of Celia Daniels and Ray Walters, played by Jaye Griffiths and Joe Absolom, who exerted control over the village.

In parallel, Moira became embroiled in legal trouble when she was arrested for possession of identifications linking her to Celia's modern slavery operations. Despite proclaiming her innocence, her inability to explain the presence of the cards in her home and her work history with Celia in agriculture placed her in a compromised position. Amidst this chaos, Ruby Miligan discovered the possible death of refugee Anya and found her burial site, which turned out to be on Moira's property. Police unearthed not only Anya's body but also Celia's, leading to Moira's immediate arrest for double murder.

Moira's inability to prove her innocence keeps her behind bars, facing the possibility of being convicted of crimes she did not commit. With Moira in prison, Cain has been forced to take responsibility for the farm, the garage, and the care of his two sons. Added to this is his diagnosis of prostate cancer, a fact he has kept secret, sharing it only with Liam Cavanagh and Sarah Sugden.

Both have tried to persuade Cain to speak openly about his situation, but he has remained firm in his position that he is fine.

However, in early March, Cain decided to go to the police station to reveal the whole truth to Moira. This meeting proved to be a highly emotional moment, in which Cain broke down and confessed his deep fear for the future. Since then, Cain and his sons have moved to Wishing Well with the rest of the Dingles. He has kept busy building a new Dingle farm for when Moira is released, using this project as a form of distraction so he doesn't have to think about his upcoming operation.

To date, there has been no official confirmation that Jeff Hordley will leave his role as Cain Dingle in Emmerdale. This fuels hope that Cain will overcome his battle with cancer. However, in the world of soap operas, anything is possible. The possibility of Cain losing his life due to another threat increases next week, as he is hit by a car. His son Kyle finds him unconscious in the middle of the road. Will Cain survive this new incident?

According to Jeff Hordley, the prostate cancer plot was conceived as 'the story of a man who doesn't normally talk about his feelings. It's bad enough having cancer, but the possible side effects of this particular illness are really damaging to men and their egos. Having to talk about that and confront it is, I think, where we want to go'. He insisted that, along with this, the whole situation is 'a great love story' between Moira and Cain.

'That was underpinning all this. How they overcome all these adverse challenges and how they face them: Moira in prison, Cain being told he has this disease and how serious it is'. When asked if their current tribulations could break Cain and Moira's marriage apart or strengthen it, Jeff said he genuinely didn't know, and that it could go either way. 'I think that's what's good about this story, for Cain and Moira,' he reflected. 'There are a series of obstacles and fences that lie in front of them that I think will really challenge them as a couple. As to whether it brings them together or breaks them, I don't think I know yet, but it will be really interesting to see'.
