In the study, OpenClaw agents were given simulated personal data, access to a Discord server, and various applications in a virtual environment.

The results revealed the security implications of letting AI agents operate without restrictions.
The agents complied with orders from spoofed identities, leaked sensitive information, and executed destructive system-level actions.

They also passed unsafe practices to other agents and even took control of the system under certain conditions.

The AI agents went as far as to gaslight their users, reporting the completion of tasks that had not actually been completed.
The researchers concluded that these behaviors raise unresolved questions about accountability, delegated authority, and downstream harms.

Natalie Shapira, co-author of the study and researcher at Northeastern University, recounted how an agent disabled an email application instead of deleting a specific email.

A recent investigation by cybersecurity firm Gen Threat Labs revealed that more than 18,000 instances of OpenClaw are exposed to attacks on the Internet.

Almost 15% of them contain malicious instructions.
