The state-owned news agency TASS reported the arrest of the alleged administrator of the LeakBase cybercrime forum in Russia on Wednesday. LeakBase was known as one of the world’s largest online forums for cybercriminals, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. This forum was known for sharing hacking tools and stolen passwords, facilitating illicit activities globally.
The arrest marks a milestone in the fight against cybercrime, demonstrating international cooperation in the pursuit of digital crimes. The detention follows the closure of LeakBase's official site and the seizure of its database, which contained information on more than 142,000 members and 215,000 messages.
This operation highlights the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies worldwide to combat cyber threats.
LeakBase, launched in 2021, amassed a vast collection of hacked databases, including hundreds of millions of usernames and passwords, banking information, and credit card numbers. The forum became a nerve center for the distribution of stolen data and hacking tools.
The U.S. Department of Justice highlighted the magnitude of the international operation against LeakBase, which involved law enforcement agents in 14 countries. This operation resulted in the execution of search warrants, arrests, and interviews in various nations, including Australia, Belgium, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The coordinated action at a global level reflects the seriousness with which cyber threats are being taken, and the determination of the authorities to dismantle platforms that facilitate digital crime.
Claire Georges, a Europol spokesperson, confirmed to TechCrunch that they did not cooperate with the Russian authorities in the arrest. This statement underscores the complexity of international cooperation in cybercrime cases, and the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in coordinating efforts.
The alleged LeakBase administrator, whose name was not revealed, resided in Taganrog, a coastal city in southern Russia. According to The Record, a total of 13 arrests were made in connection with the operation against LeakBase.
The lack of direct cooperation between Europol and the Russian authorities could indicate geopolitical tensions or differences in legal approaches, further complicating the fight against cross-border cybercrime.
